Helen Brachman.
Owned by the Children's Outing Association (COA), Camp
Helen Brachman is nestled in 200 acres of open prairie,
red pine plantation and upland hardwoods in north central
Wisconsin, 20 minutes south of Stevens Point or about
140 miles northeast of Milwaukee, WI (view
map). The
COA was founded in 1906 as a camp to give needy immigrant
children a place to go for recreation and fresh air.
Today, the agency not only provides camping, but also
conducts year-round programs including ChildCare, Neighborhood
Services, youth employment, and The Family Center.
COA’s mission is to help Milwaukee children,
teens and families reach their greatest potential through
a continuum of recreational, social work and educational
programs offered through its’ Riverwest Community
Center and rural camp facility. As a multicultural
agency, COA values diversity and cooperation and promotes
growth and positive social interaction.
The camp grounds consists of 33 buildings
which include 14 camper cabins, a main lodge for food
service, a recreation hall, a shower house, a retreat
center, 3 program cabins, a health center, a maintenance
shop and a residence for the Camp Manager. These buildings
are on the shore of Pickerel Lake which the dogs find
to be very conducive for swimming! The property provides
space for a variety of recreational programs including
camping, hiking, canoeing, etc. Camp Helen Brachman
